Majida Ali Rashid, Assistant Director General of Dubai Land Department on the first Dubai Sustainable Cities Summit (DSCS) held in Dubai last week
What was the summit about?
DSCS was a major international event that explored key issues that affect the sustainable development of cities.
How would you define a smart sustainable city?
Smart sustainable cities are defined by four key elements: integration of sustainable design and construction, smart technologies, behaviour and measurement. They are defined by 10 strategic goals laid out by the UN which the UAE supports. These include access to safe, adequate and affordable housing and public transport systems, safe keeping culture and heritage, improved economy built on sustainability, reducing the environmental impact per capita and increased access to green and public spaces.
How important is the role of individual behaviour in urban sustainability?
It’s crucial. Individual behaviour is a core requirement in bringing about greater change in society. The UAE has always focused on nurturing positive behaviour changes in various communities and we firmly believe this summit was a huge step in the right direction in supporting the country’s commitment towards building a more sustainable future.
What are the positive changes you hope to achieve?
Awareness drives change. Members of a community that are aware of a city’s environmental impact are in a much better position to be part of the process of looking for practical solutions. While awareness will inspire us to take small steps in our daily lives, a greater positive impact on society will be realised by doing so.
