The Indira Gandhi government imposed censorship of press during the period the national emergency was declared. It was removed at the end of emergency rule in March 1977.

1988

The ‘Defamation Bill’ against the Press was introduced by then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, but it was later withdrawn due to strong opposition to it.

October 2, 2016

Kashmir-based newspaper Kashmir Reader was asked to stop production by the Jammu and Kashmir state government. According to the ban order, the newspaper contained material and content that tended to incite acts of violence and disturb public peace and tranquillity.

December 2008

After the Mumbai attacks in which live coverage of the event was broadcast, the Indian government proposed a draft law that would gag media outlets broadcasting live pictures during a terrorist event or war, to ensure the safety of any hostages and to protect security operations from hindrance. This was opposed by Indian media, which argued that they adopted ‘self-regulation’ during such events and refrained from doing so anyway.
