Gaza City: Five Palestinians were wounded by Israeli army gunfire near the security fence east of Jabaliya in the northern Gaza Strip on Friday, Palestinian medical sources said.

According to a spokesman for Kamal Edwan hospital, the five — two of them local farmers — were in moderate condition.

The spokesman said that the incident occurred when a group of men congregated near the security fence to observe Israeli soldiers.

An army spokeswoman said that “several Palestinians approached the security fence in the northern Gaza Strip in an area in which staying is forbidden.

Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas which rules the Gaza Strip fought an eight-day war last month in which 177 Palestinians and six Israelis were killed, before an Egyptian-mediated ceasefire on November 21.
