Norway re-elects Kare Willoch as Prime Minister
1985 - Norwegian Prime Minister Kare Willoch’s Conservative coalition returned to power in a general election by the narrowest of majorities. The three-party government, which went into the election with 80 seats in the 157-seat parliament, won 78 seats with left-wing groups capturing 77. The right-wing Party of Progress, which remains outside the coalition, won two seats. Some 99.9 per cent of the votes had been counted and it seemed unlikely that those remaining would change the distribution of seats. The coalition lost seats to the opposition Labour Party, but became the first Conservative government to be re-elected in Norway this century. The Norwegian media described the result as a victory for Labour Party leader Gro Harlem Brundtland, whose party increased its seats from 66 to 71.
