1991 - Country music singer Dottie West died during surgery on her ruptured liver. West, 58, was badly injured in a car accident on August 30. She had been in surgery for one-and-a-half hours. It was the third operation for complications in her liver lacerations. West had been on a respirator in intensive care and Dr John A. Morris said, “When you bleed a lot and you have a 60-year-old heart, your heart does not tolerate that blood loss”. West, who has had more than 60 hit songs on country music charts since the early 1960s, was best known for her song Country Sunshine, which became the theme for a soft drink commercial in the 1970s. West was injured when the car in which she was a passenger missed a curb at high speed near the Grand Ole Opry, Nashville.
