1990 - Tragedy strikes Monaco royal family once again
Stefano Casiraghi, the 30-year-old husband of Princess Caroline of Monaco, was killed in a speedboat accident in Monaco, plunging the Grimaldi family again into grief eight years after the death of Princess Grace in a car crash. The speedboat of Casiraghi flipped over as he was defending his world offshore championship in a race off Monte Carlo, a terse official statement issued by the palace said. His co-pilot, Patrice Innocenti, was injured as he was thrown from his seat and taken to hospital after the spectacular crash at top speed in their Italian-made catamaran Knot di Pinot. But witnesses said that Casiraghi stayed in his seat and was pinned underneath the boat when a wave overturned the 5-tonne craft travelling at 150kmp. “He certainly had no chance to realise what was happening, and at that speed, stuck underneath the boat, he must have been killed instantly,” said Michel Karsenti, a French participant in the championship. His body was fished out from the water by firemen, who rushed to the scene, and taken to the morgue.
