At least 28 people died and 24 others were injured when an Indonesian plane clipped the rooftops of a housing complex and crashed into a field near this west Java hill city. Two of the 24 injured were residents of the housing estate, an official at the national search and rescue organisation in Jakarta said. Transport Minister Haryanto Dhanutirto said at the site, the pilot was apparently attempting an emergency landing at a nearby military airfield as the Sempati Air Fokker F-27 lost power after taking off from Bandung for Jakarta. The rescue official said the plane’s manifest showed it was carrying 50 passengers and crew. Eyewitnesses said the Dutchmade twin-engined turboprop Fokker clipped roofs and a wall of a housing complex about 13km from Bandung and crashed into a muddy field beside the houses. Wreckage was strewn across the field. The dead and injured were initially taken to the airbase hospital about one kilometre away.
