Armed conflict between Andean nations has killed at least 31 people

1995 - Peru and Ecuador have agreed to a ceasefire and end an armed conflict between both Andean nations that has killed at least 31 people. “Ecuador accepts to agree with Peru ... that the ceasefire and the end of all military activity that can be interpreted as threatening will go into effect today,” the Ecuadoran Foreign Ministry said. Observers of the signatories of the Rio de Janeiro Protocol, which established in 1942 the boundaries between both countries, will monitor the ceasefire. The ministry also said Ecuador will send a representative to a meeting in Brasilia with Peru and protocol signatories Chile, Argentina, Brazil and the United States to start negotiations to end the border dispute. Since clashes erupted, Ecuador said 31 soldiers have died.
