1993 - The besieged cult headquarters of religious fanatic David Koresh exploded in flames set by his own followers, apparently killing more than 85 people in a possible mass suicide. There was immediate speculation that Koresh’s followers had set fire to the compound to fulfil a prophecy from the charismatic Koresh, who had refused many times to surrender or let his followers give up. The FBI only said there was “massive loss of life” in the fire. FBI spokesman Bob Ricks told a press conference only eight of the estimated 95 cult followers in the compound were known so far to have survived the blaze. Asked what had happened to the others Ricks replied:”We can only assume that few if any others survived. There was massive loss of life.”
