Dubai: European plane maker Airbus has released new images of the world’s first flying car that premiered at the 87th Geneva International Motor Show.

The modular, fully electric, zero-emission concept vehicle system has been conceptualised to ease traffic in heavily populated cities.

Dubbed Pop.Up by its makers Airbus and service company Italdesign, the futuristic car can operate on the ground and in the air.

The smart-sized car, measuring 2.6 metres long, 1.4 metres high and 1.5 metres wide, has three components.

The first one is the capsule where the passenger sits in. The second part is the ground module, to which the wheels are attached, while the third component looks a lot like a giant drone that can take the car off the ground and fly away.

Another cool feature about the car is that there's no need to drive it. The vehicle can pilot itself.

According to Airbus the vehicle seeks to “give time back to commuters through a flexible, shared and adaptable new way of moving within cities."

“[It] combines the flexibility of a small two-seater ground vehicle with the freedom and speed of a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) air vehicle, thus bridging the automotive and aerospace domains.”
