It is the third time Trump has extended the deadline
President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order extending the deadline for TikTok to find a non-Chinese buyer by another 90 days, moving the ban date to September 17, 2025.
This marks the third extension of the deadline originally set after a national ban was approved by Congress and upheld by the US Supreme Court.
The first extension came on Trump’s first day in office, January 20, to prevent TikTok from going dark. The second extension, in April, followed failed negotiations to spin off TikTok into a US-owned company. That deal collapsed after China pulled out when Trump imposed new tariffs.
It is still uncertain how many times Trump can continue extending the deadline, as there is no clear legal basis for these delays. So far, no legal challenge has been brought against the extensions.
Trump, who has gained over 15 million followers on TikTok, credited the platform for boosting his popularity among young voters. He previously said he has a “warm spot for TikTok.”
Despite some scrutiny over Trump’s continued use of executive orders to delay the ban, TikTok’s fate in the U.S. seems increasingly secure for the time being, with no legal cases yet filed against the extensions.
