Sony’s Nex Series presents a viable option for those thinking of stepping up from a point-and-shoot to a more powerful camera, but are not interested in the bulk and price point of
a DSLR.

The entry-level 3 series is aimed at compact camera users, looking for better image quality but hoping to avoid the bulk and perceived complexity of a DSLR. The Nex-3N is the
company’s latest addition to its basic entry-level compact camera system (CSC) range. It replaces the Sony Nex-F3 and has a slimmer
and sleeker chassis, which makes it the smallest and lightest CSC to feature an
APS-C-sized sensor.

The 3N misses the faster on-sensor, phase detection autofocus seen on its cousin, the Nex-5R. It also lacks the touch screen interface and Wi-Fi functions offered in the 5R — these have been omitted to keep costs down. The Nex- 3N builds on the features
of the F3, but loses the latter’s accessory port, used for attaching an external viewfinder.

The inclusion of Sony’s 16-50mm retractable power zoom lens, which offers an unusually wide-angle view (24-75mm equivalent) and optical image stabilisation, is an additional positive. A first is the presence of a
zoom lever near the shutter release, very similar to those found on compact cameras.

The Nex-3N’s diminutive body is comfortable to hold thanks to the rubber grip on its body. Its screen tilts at 180 degrees — perfect for
self-portraits though difficult to view in bright sunlight. There is no mode dial
on the top unlike the other, higher-spec Nex cameras. Instead, you press a button at the back of the camera to access a virtual dial. Likewise, there are no dedicated dials for changing other parameters, such as aperture
and shutter speed.

This camera is aimed at those who like to shoot auto and let the camera make decisions for them. Having said that, the image quality
does not disappoint. A few niggles aside, this excellent Nex camera is a great buy for first-time CSC users.
