Acer aims to become top notebook vendor by 2011

Mobility only growing segment in industry

Dubai: Acer is gearing up to step into fierce competition in the global notebook market in a bid to become the number one vendor by 2011 and to become the biggest overall in a few more years, the managing director of the Taiwanese firm said.

"Mobility is the only growing segment in the IT industry while desktop sales is eroding continuously in the PC segment, Krishna Murthy, Managing Director of Acer Computer, MEA, said.

Quoting Gartner's report, he said the total PC sales in the Middle East and Africa declined by six per cent mainly due to notebook declines while notebook sales are robust due to a 20 to 25 per cent jump.

He said next year Acer will re-enter the MEA TV segment by launching LCD and LED TVs.

"Acer will challenge Hewlett-Packard next year to become the world's biggest notebook brand. Hewlett-Packard also has big goals, so our battle for the crown will be a tough battle," Acer President Gianfranco Lanci said recently.
