The Thunder guard beat Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets to the prize
Oklahoma City Thunder star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been named the NBA's Most Valuable Player for the 2024–25 season, edging out Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo for the league’s top individual honor.
The Canadian guard the league with 32.7 points per game and posted averages of 5.0 rebounds, 6.4 assists, 1.72 steals, and 1.01 blocks across 76 games. He set career highs in scoring, assists, and blocks while logging 34.2 minutes per night.
Speaking on TNT following the announcement, Gilgeous-Alexander reflected on the achievement: "You try so hard throughout the season to not think about it and just worry about playing basketball and getting better and trying to win games. But as a competitor, as a kid dreaming about the game, it's always in the back of your mind, and I am very grateful to be on this side of the ballot."
He becomes the first Thunder player to earn MVP honors since Russell Westbrook in 2017. Kevin Durant also won the award for Oklahoma City in 2014.
“Any conversation about me being with those two guys who have done amazing things,” Shai Gilgeous-Alexander said when asked about joining the ranks of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook., “is hard to put into words.”
The Thunder currently lead their NBA Western Conference finals series against the Minnesota Timberwolves 1–0 after a commanding 114–88 victory in Game 1 on Tuesday night.
