Dubai: The name Mavericks Cricket Club may suggest a group of non-conformists — but its members swear by the ethics of the game and believe the game deserves the best of facilities.

For the last three and-a-half years, the self-sponsored club has been staging close to 20 league matches but plays only on top-class turf wickets and in the best of venues with quality cricket gear. Their motto of playing quality cricket entails big expenses but they haven’t shied away.

Speaking to Gulf News, Umer Sultan of Mavericks Club said: “We have organised this tournament for like-minded people who want to play quality cricket. We are self-sponsored and do not believe in generating any profit out of staging a tournament. In fact it is a non-profit event mainly to promote cricket and give the participants the feel of quality cricket.”

The Mavericks’ tournaments have been staged on turf wickets at the 7evens ground and they had not been affiliated to the Dubai Cricket Council (DCC) until this year. “We used to stage our tournaments with qualified Dubai umpires with best of facilities. From now on, we have decided to come under the umbrella of the DCC and decided to stage an even higher quality tournament,” Sultan said.

The tournament is called DCC-Mavericks Ring of Fire T20 league and is being held at the Dubai International stadium.

“We also wanted to highlight the quality of the stadium we are playing in and hence name our event as Ring of Fire as this is the only ground with such a lighting facility. Every player has been given best of coloured clothing, with matches being played with high-quality Kookaburra cricket balls,” Sultan added.
