Dubai: Two rackets. One dream. And now, a place in history. Taabia and Mysha Omar have become the first players to qualify the UAE for the BWF World Championships — a breakthrough moment for the nation and its fast-rising badminton scene. The sisters will represent the country in Paris this August, as the UAE makes its long-awaited debut on the sport’s biggest annual stage.

The 2025 edition of the tournament will be held at the iconic Adidas Arena from August 25 to 31, bringing together the world’s best players in a global showcase of badminton excellence.

A rising duo from the Emirates

Taabia Omar, aged 19, has already made a name for herself on the world stage. She currently holds the No 1 spot in women’s doubles and is ranked No 2 in mixed doubles on the BWF World Junior Rankings.

Her younger sister Mysha, who turns 17 later this year, has also made headlines. Formerly world No 10 in both women’s singles and doubles (with Taabia), she stormed to prominence in 2024 by winning the girls’ singles title at the All-England Junior Championships, adding to her earlier doubles triumphs.

Forged in Dubai, destined for Paris

Both sisters are products of the UAE Badminton High Performance Department, led by Performance Director Michael Norbek. Their day-to-day training takes place at Battledore Sports Academy in Dubai under the guidance of coach Alfaz Kalam, whose mentorship has played a crucial role in their development.

The success of Taabia and Mysha reflects the UAE Badminton Federation’s long-term vision — one that prioritises inclusivity, structure, and support for resident athletes, enabling them to thrive on the international circuit while proudly representing the UAE.

Inspiring a new generation

With final preparations underway, the spotlight now turns to Paris — and to the two sisters who will carry the hopes of a nation. Their achievement is more than just a personal milestone: it’s a symbol of possibility, progress, and pride for the region’s sporting future.

“This is a proud moment for the UAE badminton community. It is a clear signal to our youth that excellence is possible with hard work and support. We wish Taabia and Mysha the very best as they carry the UAE flag on the world stage,” said Noura Hassan Al Jasmi, President of the UAE Badminton Federation.

As the countdown to Paris begins, Taabia and Mysha Omar are not just preparing for the biggest tournament of their young careers — they’re carving out a new chapter in UAE sporting history.
