Dubai-born Josh Hill bowed out of The Amateur Championship at the last 32 after going down 6&4 to James Ashfield at Ballyliffin Golf Club.

The Englishman, who is currently studying at the University of Tennessee on a golf scholarship, had finished tied 21st in the stroke play competition to book his spot in the match play section, where he saw off Nicklaus Mason in the first round.

But Hill’s tournament came to an end in the following round against an impressive Ashfield, who competed for Great Britain & Ireland at the 2023 Walker Cup, with the Irishman cruising to victory.

“James played very well and I had two poor mistakes,” said Hill following the defeat.

“It was an ok week, but I was looking to get a lot further.

“I feel good about my game. I’ve just got to keep working at it and the good results will follow.”

Hill will now head back to the States to compete in a series of events this summer before continuing his studies at the University of Tennessee.

The Amateur Championship will conclude tomorrow after today’s quarter finals and semi finals, with the champion receiving exemptions into The Open, US Open and by tradition, an invitation to play in The Masters tournament.
