Michael Gibson and Padraig Curry lead the Men’s Club Championship sponsored by Al Masaood at Yas Links Abu Dhabi after the first round of this 36 hole event.
In today’s first round they both shot three over par gross 75’s to be one shot clear of George Huang and 2020 Club Champion and Scratch League Captain, Ricus Lehmkuhl, in tied third place.
Gibson playing off a six handicap, had nines of 38 and 37, whilst Curry off a handicap of +1, had nines of 37 and 38, both making two birdies each.
Play was from the 6,600 yards par 72 course.
In the Ladies’ Division, played from the 5,400 yards course set up, teenager Zurich Kanokpornvasin (+1) shot the round of the day, a two under par gross 70 to dominate the Division. She was out in a three birdie 33 and despite a bogey six on the 18th, takes a ten-stroke lead into tomorrow’s final round.
The second round of the Club Championships takes place tomorrow (Sunday) with the leaders out last in threeballs, the Men’s Division at 8.50 am and the Ladies Division at 8.00 am.
Martin Duff, Golf Operations Manager at Yas Links Abu Dhabi, said at the conclusion of round one, ‘We have had a good first day. There has been plenty of excellent golf out there in ideal conditions. There is a lot to play for with prizes in both the gross and net divisions and we look forward to tomorrow (Sunday), in this our flagship tournament on our Members’ domestic golf calendar.’
