Dubai resident Thorbjørn Olesen is set to return to competitive action for the first time since finishing inside the top 15 at the Olympic Games when he tees it up on home soil at next week’s Danish Golf Championship.

The Dane, who won the Ras Al Khaimah Championship earlier this season, is set to join a strong Danish contingent at Lübker Golf Resort, with DP World Tour Championship winner Nicolai Højgaard also in field, along with Nicolai’s twin brother Rasmus, who became the first Danish winner in the history of the event, formerly known as Made in HimmerLand.

“It’s always special having the opportunity to play on home soil,” said Olesen, who has played in every edition of the event thus far.

“The crowds are really up for the week and we get so much support from them.”

Højgaard, who fired a course-record equalling nine under par 62 during the third round of the Olmypic Games golf competition, added: “I’m very excited to get back to Denmark to compete in the Danish Golf Championship. It was very special seeing Rasmus become the first home winner of the event last year, but I would love to get one over him this time around and lift the trophy myself.”

Other Danish players in the field include Niklas Norgaard, Jeff Winther, Søren Kjeldsen and Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen, who won the UAE Challenge at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club earlier this year.

Thomas Bjørn, who is serving as the Tournament Chairman for this year’s event, spoke of his pride in anticipation of seeing a strong group of Danish competitors at the tournament.

“I’m incredibly proud of the talent that Denmark has produced in recent years and we are set for a thrilling Danish Golf Championship,” said Bjørn. “There are established DP World Tour stars and some very exciting youngsters to watch out for at Lübker Golf Resort and it just goes to show how healthy the professional game is in our country.

“Of course we are very proud of Rasmus and his achievement last year and we would love nothing more than seeing another Danish winner on home soil.”
