Dubai-based Tommy Fleetwood has offered his deepest sympathies to the families of children that were tragically killed and injured in his home town of Southport on Monday.

Two children have been killed and nine more injured, six critically, in a knife attack in northern England on Monday, police said.

A 17-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder over the attack in Southport, near Liverpool in northwest England, which also left two adults with critical injuries, Merseyside Police said in a news conference.

Fleetwood, who was born in raised in Southport before moving to Dubai in 2022, took to Instagram to share his support for members of the Southport community after the devastating attack.

"I am absolutely heartbroken at the news coming out of Southport today,” posted Fleetwood.

“My thoughts are with the families of the children who were tragically killed and injured. What they are going through is unimaginable. As a parent myself it’s difficult to even comprehend what has happened and what they have ahead of them, but I know the whole community in Southport will come together to support them.

“My heart will always be in Southport and together with my family we are sending all of our love to the people of my home town."

Fleetwood is currently in Paris ahead of his appearance in the Olympic Games’ golf tournament where he is representing Team GB, alongside two-time DP World Tour Championship winner Matt Fitzpatrick.

“Go win that Gold for Southport,” urged one user under Fleetwood’s post.
