Toby Bishop (Trump International) completed a wire-to-wire victory with a final round level par 72 in the 2022 Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah Amateur Championship at Al Hamra Golf Club for a 54-hole total of 210, six under par.
The tournament, sanctioned by the Emirates Golf Federation, is the final event on the 2021-2022 EGF Men’s Order of Merit.
Bishop started the final round on six under par, with a five-shot lead from Dan Byrne (The Els Club).
A level par front nine holes, with a birdie / bogey run on holes 5 and 6 saw Bishop out in level par 36 and at the turn, a reduced lead of just three shots, from Byrne, who had a brilliant start of bogey, birdie, eagle and birdie to turn in 34.
Tied at the top
Bishop started back on the homeward nine with a double on hole 10 and with Byrne making another birdie on the same hole, saw the two leaders, Bishop and Byrne, paired together and tied at the top of the leaderboard, on the same score for the 46 holes played, at four under par with just eight holes to play.
Bishop then birdied holes 12 and 13 and the champion finished in style with a final hole grandstand finish birdie to win by two shots from the fast finishing Hugo Garcia (EGC), with a best score of the tournament, a seven birdie 67, with Byrne coming home in a disappointing 38 with a double / par / bogey stretch from holes 14 – 16, to settle for tied fourth overall on one under par 215.
Armand Papaziani (France), the third player in the final group for the final round, was the only other player, in addition to Garcia, in the 37 strong field, to break 70 on the last day, and his 69 lifted him to third place overall on his own.
Five players in the field broke the par of 216 over the 54-hole, three round tournament, that is a qualifier for R&A World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points.
