Crowd erupted in cheers as the 34-year-old golfer stood in disbelief
Dubai: British golfer Tommy Fleetwood may have had an unlikely assistant during the BMW Championship in Maryland, USA, last week.
During one of the crucial moments in the tournament, Fleetwood’s shot appeared to stop just centimetres short of the hole.
Spectators and Fleetwood himself were already bracing for a par. But in a surprising twist, just a few seconds later, the ball suddenly began to roll again and dropped straight into the hole.
The crowd erupted in cheers as the 34-year-old golfer stood in disbelief, stunned by what had just happened.
Upon reviewing the replay, the surprising cause was revealed - a fly. The tiny insect had flown over the ball at just the right moment, appearing to nudge it ever so slightly forward — enough to tip it into the hole.
While it's impossible to say for certain whether the insect truly made contact, the timing sparked plenty of amusement and amazement online.
Thanks to the unexpected birdie, Fleetwood climbed the leaderboard to finish fourth overall, securing a prize of $910,000.
