London: Adnan Januzaj will elect to play for England if the FA can overcome the obstacle of the five-year residency rule.

The Manchester United winger, born in Brussels to Kosovar-Albanian parents, has already rejected the advances of Belgium.

But the FA have been given a strong indication that Januzaj, 18, who is eligible to represent four other countries, would prefer England unless Kosovo are recognised as a nation by Fifa.

Sources close to the Januzaj family have confirmed this, as Sportsmail today reveals the story behind the most wanted teenager in European football.

The key is how long Januzaj must wait for clearance, because under current rules he has to spend another three years in England before he would be eligible.

England manager Roy Hodgson and FA chairman Greg Dyke have spoken of their desire to look at recruiting Januzaj. That process could begin with an application for a British passport and a legal challenge to residency rules.
