Champions Bin Drai face El Basha in opener, with other top teams vying for glory
Dubai: The stage is set for one of the most exhilarating polo events of the year — the Emaar Polo Cup. With its 12-goal handicap, the tournament promises heart-pounding action as top-tier polo teams take to the field at the Dubai Polo and Equestrian Club this Tuesday.
“This tournament is a strategic highlight in the UAE polo calendar,” said Nayef Bou Hamdan, General Manager of Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club. “The Dubai Polo Club launched this event six years ago with a vision to elevate the sport, and with Emaar’s ongoing support, we’ve seen incredible growth. These successes have laid a strong foundation for UAE polo teams.” He added, “It’s one of the most unique sporting events in the world, and not just anyone can be part of it.”
Champions Bin Drai begin their defence against El Basha Polo Team in the tournament opener, set to take place from February 11-23 at the Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club. The medium-goal tournament will feature some of the region’s most esteemed polo teams, including those represented by high-profile figures. The other contenders include: Abu Dhabi Polo Team, AM Polo Team, Noon Polo Team, Equiti Polo Team, and Lamar Polo Team. Bin Drai defeated Bangash in a pulsating final to clinch the title last year.
“The Emaar Polo Cup is not only a testament to skill and sportsmanship but also reflects the enduring legacy of polo in our region,” said Ahmad Al Matrooshi, Executive Director of Emaar Properties. “By enhancing this prestigious tournament with significant prize money and a vibrant array of events, Emaar continues to promote sporting excellence and provide unparalleled experiences for both players and spectators.”
The champions will take home Dh80,000, while the runners-up will receive Dh40,000. Equiti Polo will meet Abu Dhabi, while AM Polo will face Lamar Polo Team in the opening day’s action of the seven-team tournament.
The Emaar Polo Cup follows the UAE Polo Federation Cup, which saw a record nine teams competing for the first time in the tournament’s history — a clear testament to the sport’s growing popularity in the UAE. “This tournament is important for the growth of polo. Every year, a new partner comes in,” said Santiago Torreguitar, a member of the UAE Polo Federation tournament committee. “There are a few possible prospects for high-goal teams, and a lot of kids are starting to play as well.”
He added, “We have three high 20-goal level tournaments and three medium-goal tournaments. They are two fantastic levels, and we have lots of teams competing in each.”
As the Emaar Polo Cup kicks off, all eyes will be on the competition that continues to define polo in the UAE. With thrilling matchups, prestigious teams, and a substantial prize pool, the tournament is set to offer an unforgettable experience. The stage is set for a battle of skill, strategy, and passion — who will emerge as the next champion?
