Dubai: In modern-day sports, age seems to be nothing more than a number. Advanced training techniques and heightened fitness awareness have allowed players like Mahendra Singh Dhoni, James Anderson, and Cristiano Ronaldo to extend their careers far beyond conventional limits.

Not only are these superstars still competing, but they continue to perform at the highest level, thrilling their fans around the globe.

Defying Time: Anderson, Ronaldo, and Dhoni lead the way

England’s highest wicket-taker, Anderson, has signed a one-year contract with Lancashire at the age of 42, extending his career past his 43rd birthday. Meanwhile, Ronaldo, now 39, has set a new record by scoring goals in 24 consecutive calendar years — the highest in football history. The Portuguese legend remains pivotal for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League.

On the cricket field, former Indian skipper MS Dhoni is preparing for yet another season with Chennai Super Kings. At 43, he is gearing up for the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which kicks off on March 21 and runs through May 25. Recently spotted playing tennis in Ranchi, Dhoni’s commitment to fitness remains unwavering.

The secret behind Dhoni’s longevity

What keeps Dhoni going in the demanding world of cricket? His secret is simplicity — both in his gameplay and fitness regime.

Ramji Srinivas, the fitness trainer for India’s 2011 World Cup-winning team, credits Dhoni’s success to his natural ability and a disciplined approach. “Dhoni understands his body well and doesn’t get swayed by the latest fitness trends or gadgets,” said Ramji, 57, who served as the team’s strength and conditioning coach under Dhoni’s captaincy. “He sticks to the basics required for his skill set.”

Despite facing injuries — including a recent knee surgery and past back issues — Dhoni has been a cornerstone of Chennai Super Kings. Except for the two seasons when the team was banned due to the IPL betting case in 2013, Dhoni has remained the heart of the franchise, earning the adoration of their passionate “Yellove” fans.

Injury management and the IPL schedule

Ramji believes Dhoni’s decision to limit his cricket to just the IPL has been key to his longevity.

“Avoidance of injury is as important as fitness,” said Ramji. “By playing only during the two-month IPL season, Dhoni has the time to heal and recover, which is crucial for someone of his age. He isn’t under external pressure and has the freedom to manage his schedule as he sees fit.”

Dhoni himself revealed during an event hosted by Etihad last year that he begins preparing for the IPL in December while spending Christmas with his family in Dubai.

Dhoni’s December rituals in Dubai

“Around Christmas, we spend time in Dubai as a family,” Dhoni shared. “I’m not someone who travels a lot or tries many things, but in Dubai, I enjoy playing padel tennis and exploring emerging sports.

“The weather is nice in December, so after a game, I might hit the gym to prepare for the IPL season, which starts in April. That’s my routine in Dubai.”

As the 18th season of the IPL approaches, fans are gearing up for another blockbuster tournament. With Dhoni still the linchpin for Chennai Super Kings, the excitement is palpable.
