Dubai: The cricket world is still coming to terms with reports of Virat Kohli’s potential retirement from Test cricket — and now, even the County Championship has added its voice, albeit with a cheeky dig.

On Saturday, the official County Championship account posted a video showing England pacers Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue dismantling batters with pace and precision. The caption: “We don’t blame you, Virat.” A light-hearted swipe, clearly referencing England’s testing conditions for batters — and perhaps a nod to the upcoming Test series India are scheduled to play in the UK.

While Kohli has yet to officially confirm his retirement, multiple reports suggest the 36-year-old has communicated his decision to the Indian selectors. According to The Times of India, Kohli informed the board of his intent two weeks ago and has stood firm despite pleas from the BCCI and former greats like Brian Lara.

Returning to captaincy

"Kohli had informed the selectors... They were trying to persuade him to play the Test series against England. However, he is still firm on his stance," a source told the paper. There are also suggestions that Kohli wanted to return as Test captain — a request that was reportedly declined by the board.

West Indies legend Brian Lara, who remains hopeful of a U-turn, posted on social media: “Test cricket needs Virat!! He is going to be persuaded. He is NOT going to retire from Test cricket. @virat.kohli is going to average above 60 for the remainder of his Test career.”

Former India opener Navjot Singh Sidhu also weighed in with high praise, urging Kohli to reconsider. “His motive is noble — that ‘the old order must change, yielding place to the new’. But the timing and occasion are not appropriate, because the pride and prestige of India are on the line,” Sidhu said in a video message.

Consistent occupants for 35 years

If Kohli does indeed walk away, it will bring down the curtain on a remarkable Test career that began in 2011 and saw him seamlessly take over the No. 4 slot from Sachin Tendulkar. In fact, India’s No. 4 spot has had just two consistent occupants over the past 35 years — Tendulkar and Kohli — making the vacancy feel even more daunting.

If and when Kohli decides to call it a day, KL Rahul, who opened alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, could drop to No. 3, with Shubman Gill taking over at No. 4 — a role the young batter seems destined for. Karun Nair and Shreyas Iyer could complete the middle order, while a new opener like Sai Sudharsan might be trialled.

Regardless of who fills the void, the challenge of guiding a transitioning team will be immense. And the County Championship’s post might be playful — but it underlines a harsh truth: batting in England is not for the faint-hearted.
