Shinwari leaves behind a legacy of professionalism, dedication, and passion for the game
The international cricket community is mourning the loss of Bismillah Jan Shinwari, a respected Afghan umpire and member of the ICC International Panel of Umpires. He passed away at the age of 41 following an illness.
Shinwari had a notable career on the global stage, having officiated in 25 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 21 T20 Internationals (T20Is). He made his international debut in December 2017, standing in an ODI between Afghanistan and Ireland in Sharjah.
His last international assignment was during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 in Al Amerat, Oman, in February 2025.
International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman Jay Shah expressed deep sorrow at Shinwari’s passing.
“Bismillah was a prominent umpire respected by players, peers, and officials alike. He was a regular on the international circuit and had a long career ahead of him,” Shah said in a statement. “His contributions to the game were immense. We are profoundly saddened by this loss and extend our condolences to his family and loved ones.”
The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) also paid tribute to Shinwari, sharing their condolences on social media.
“Bismillah Jan was a great servant of Afghan cricket,” the ACB said. “The leadership, staff, and entire AfghanAtalan family are deeply shocked and saddened by his demise. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends, and the wider cricket fraternity.”
