A complete guide to online car registration in Dubai – requirements, fees, and process
Dubai: For Dubai residents who have recently purchased a new car or imported a vehicle from abroad, the registration process is now easier than ever. Instead of visiting service centres and waiting in long queues, you can complete the registration online and receive your vehicle ownership certificate through the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) website – rta.ae. Here’s everything you need to know about the process, including requirements, costs, and step-by-step instructions.
To register your vehicle online, ensure you have the following documents ready:
Valid Emirates ID
Electronic customs certificate (for imported vehicles)
Electronic change of possession certificate (if you have purchased a brand-new car)
Electronic insurance certificate
Vehicle test certificate (for applicable vehicles)
Here are the costs associated with registering a vehicle in Dubai:
Registration for a light private vehicle: Dh400
Short car number plate fee: Dh35
Long car number plate fee: Dh50
Vehicle inspection fee: Dh150
Additional charges: Dh20 knowledge and innovation fee
Follow these steps to register your new or imported vehicle online:
Visit the RTA website – www.rta.ae
Access the service
Under the ‘Services’ tab, click on ‘Drivers and Car Owners Services’ and select ‘Apply for Registering a New Vehicle’.
Log in
Sign in using your UAE Pass account. Once logged in, you will be directed to your personal dashboard.
Initiate the application
Click on ‘Vehicles’, then select ‘Register New Vehicle’ and click on ‘Apply Now’.
Provide vehicle details
Select the vehicle source of ownership:
Import certificate (if imported from abroad through customs) or
Transfer certificate (if purchased within Dubai or another emirate).
Enter the certificate number and click ‘Continue’.
Choose a number plate
Select your preferred vehicle number plate type (short or long).
Choose a delivery option for the number plate and ownership certificate via courier (additional charges apply).
Review and confirm
Check all entered details carefully and electronically sign the application.
Make payment
Pay the required registration fees online. Upon successful payment, you will receive a confirmation.
Although most of the registration process is completed online, you must take your vehicle for an inspection at an authorised RTA vehicle testing centre if required.
