Ismaili spiritual leader the Aga Khan, Prince Karim Al Husseini died on Tuesday aged 88, leaving millions of followers in mourning across the world.

The Swiss-born philanthropist was given the title of Aga Khan at the age of 20 by his grandfather, who skipped the line of succession for the first time since the seventh century to appoint a "young man" of the "new age". Here is a look at his life and times through images.
