All the movies releasing this weekend, January 16

PARASITE (Korean, with English subtitles): With multiple awards already in its kitty and Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Director for Bong Joon Ho, this one's one of the most anticipated films this week. Ki-taek's family of four is close, but fully unemployed, with a bleak future ahead of them. The son Ki-woo is recommended by his friend, a student at a prestigious university, for a well-paid tutoring job, spawning hopes of a regular income. Ki-woo heads to the Park family home for an interview and meets Yeon-kyo, the beautiful young lady of the house. But following this first meeting between the two families, an unstoppable string of mishaps lies in wait.

BIG BROTHER (Malayalam): Starring Mohanlal, Arbaaz Khan and Anoop Menon, this drama tells the story of Sachidanadan who is released from prison after 24 years. As he tries to adjust to the new world around him, he’s unwillingly drawn into a drug racket that could upend his life once again.

PATTAS (Tamil): This action film stars Dhanush, Sneha Babu and Mehreen Pirzada and is about Sakthi, a petty thief in a Chennai slum who learns the Adimurai - the ancient and oldest form of martial arts, to fulfill his father Velappan’s destiny. Meanwhile, an evil man and his son challenge Sakthi for a kickboxing tournament, and Sakthi agrees to participate in it.

AVANE SIRMANNARAYANA (Kannada): A corrupt, maverick police officer takes on a bandit chief to recover a hoard of treasure which has been missing for years. Rakshit Shetty, Shanvi Srivastava and Achyuth Kumar star.

DHAMAKA (Malayalam): A cunning father makes a plan for his son's marriage to a divorced millionaire. But the marriage hits the rocks and shakes their life after revelations are made. Hilarity ensues. Dharmajan Bolgatty, Sabumon Abdusamad and Idavela Babu star in this comedy.

DOLITTLE (English): Another take on the Doctor Dolittle series of books, Robert Downey Jr plays the doctor who, after losing his wife seven years earlier, hermits himself away behind the high walls of Dolittle Manor with only his (talking) exotic animals for company. But when the young queen falls gravely ill, a reluctant Dolittle is forced to set sail on an epic adventure to a mythical island in search of a cure. Emma Thompson and Tom Holland also star.

BAD BOYS FOR LIFE (English): Will Smith and Martin Lawrence return in this sequel. Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) is now a police inspector and Mike Lowery (Smith) is in a midlife crisis. They unite again when an Albanian mercenary, whose brother they killed, promises them an important bonus. Vanessa Hudgens also features in the film.

FOODIVERSE (English): This dubbed Chinese animated film is set in a universe consisting of planets made of food, and follows the adventures of dumpling Mrs Penny and her friend Mr Podge, a slightly portly steamed bun in Flour Planet.

L.O.L. SURPRISE! ON THE BIG SCREEN (English): A film version of the best-selling toys, you’ll play trivia with Tahani and Mykal-Michelle, learn some new dance moves, and have an awesome time reliving your favourite L.O.L. Surprise moments, bigger and brighter.

A HIDDEN LIFE (English): From acclaimed director Terrence Malick comes this film based on real events. The movie tells the story of an unsung hero, Franz Jagerstatter, who refused to fight for the Nazis in the Second World War. When the Austrian peasant farmer is faced with the threat of execution for treason, it is his unwavering faith and his love for his wife, Fani, and children that keeps his spirit alive.

JAI MUMMY DI (Hindi): A light-hearted family comedy that portrays the trials and tribulations a couple has to undergo due to the dynamics between their respective mothers. 2. Veteran actors Poonam Dhillon and Rathna Pathak Shah play the diva mothers from hell, while Seygall and Singh play forbidden lovers Saanjh and Puneet.
