Run-of-the-mill parenting tactics in one household may be considered extreme in another as one US-based mum learned the hard way when she posted a video on TikTok about how she teaches her child money management skills.

Felicia Farley recently posted a video explaining that her seven-year-old is expected to ‘earn money’ through chores and pay rent and living expenses.

"Every week my daughter has a list of chores. If those chores are completed daily, she will get $7 (Dh25.71) at the end of the week," she says in the clip.

"In total, she pays $5 for bills, leaving $2 left over, which she can then keep and save or spend."

The list includes tasks such as toilet cleaning and filling the laundry basket.

Netizens of course had a bunch of retorts to this parenting hack, with one writing: “She's not an adult – she's a child. Pay your own bills!”

Another wondered how the child suffered if she didn’t comply with her mum’s requests. “Okay, but what happens if she doesn't do the chores? You just not feed her?” the user wrote.

US-based mum clapped back on the haters, explaining that the child was well cared for and loved. It was just a way to teach accountability and for her to feel like she was contributing to the family. “Of course I don't withhold food or anything else from her … the money goes into a savings account that she will have access to when she's 18 … and she can learn that she made all that money on her own!

“It's not about the bills. I'm trying to give her a foundation that I never had,” she said.
