Our inadvertent over-reliance on technology, especially smartphones and tablets to keep abreast of news, work and simply to stay connected to our friends and relatives, is taking a toll on our health. But before we go blaming these modern age gadgets, we need to indulge in some introspection and question our own habits. According to medical experts, it is the excessive use of smartphones and tablets that is affecting our sleeping patterns by fooling our body clock to assume it’s daytime. This could lead to obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Lack of sufficient rest for the body to recuperate, which occurs best when we are in deep sleep, triggers unhealthy eating habits and fatigue.

As a result of constantly turning to our devices to check the latest updates we are clearly heading towards a health disaster. It is even more dangerous for children as insufficient sleep can prevent the secretion of a growth hormone at night.

Maybe it is time we switch off our gadgets and restrict children to use computers and mobiles only for limited duration well before bedtime.
