As the Muslim world is stunned by the horrific news of Muslims being slaughtered in Myanmar, the country’s leading politician and a supposed human rights defender, Aung San Suu Kyi, has chosen not to see evil.
Hundreds of Rohingyas Muslims, a minority in the Asian country, have reportedly been killed at the hands of the majority Buddhists in the Rakhine province. The massacres have been going on for weeks. The United Nations just woke up and decided to send an envoy “to investigate”. But the disturbing reports — images of burnt bodies and wailing mothers — have been steaming in for weeks. Reports by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch were released, calling for the world to condemn the massacres.
All that does not seem to bother the Noble Laureate and so-called “democracy advocate”. Suu Kyi just sits silent even as children, women and helpless elderly are being massacred by monks and mob. Her “humanitarian values” do not obviously embrace the poor of Rohingyas Muslims. We are shocked by the flagrant hypocrisy of this woman. The entire Muslim world stood by and supported her when she was reeling under the injustice of the ruling junta. We don’t regret that. But we condemn her hypocrisy and the hypocrisy of the western world which has yet to react to the plight of a defenceless minority.
