The issue is multifaceted
Statistics released recently by the Dubai Police Traffic Department on the emirate's pedestrian death rate are appalling. Over the past six years, the death rate has increased by 118 per cent. Between 2000 and 2005, around 338 pedestrians were killed in various accidents. Last year alone, 98 pedestrians were killed. Brigadier Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of Dubai Police Traffic Department, has correctly put the responsibility on all the parties involved in such accidents, especially the motorist.
The issue at hand is multifaceted. For one thing, there are the jaywalkers who risk their lives by crossing roads in non-designated areas. Accidents on the interchanges or busy main roads stand as proof. In fact, by flouting the rules these careless pedestrians not only risk their own lives but also the lives of motorists and passengers riding in the vehicles. On the other hand though, in some cases it is motorists who should shoulder the blame for the injury and death of many pedestrians. Such accidents take place either because of reckless driving or speed.
In order to control the spiralling of pedestrian deaths, it is necessary to enforce a culture that respects the rights of both pedestrians and motorists.
