Stronger laws, wider awareness

Curbing trade in exotic animals requires a clear legal framework and public education

Last updated:

In order to ensure that a ban on ownership of endangered animals is effective and successful, there are important elements that must be addressed. Firstly, there has to be a legal framework that is clear and enforced. Secondly, a well-planned public awareness drive is crucial to ensure the success of any campaign to protect endangered animals.

Dubai Customs, for instance, recently launched an awareness campaign that aims to discourage people from smuggling exotic animals into the country. This not only helps educate the public, but also clearly defines what is legal and what is not.

The UAE may soon introduce a national list of endangered species of plants and animals. Such a direction is welcome as it will educate people as well as advance the cause. It will also clear any confusion on what is categorised as being endangered and will apply stricter controls on the trade.
