With the liberation of Kobani by Kurdish Peshmergas, with the help of the US-led coalition, the prediction of an American coordinator that Daesh (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) would “impale” itself on this Syrian border town has come true. This comes Five months into the fight to regain control over this key area, that was once two-thirds in the grip of Daesh. This huge defeat for the terrorist organisation can be seen as emblematic of the shape of things to come. The importance of Kobani as a pivotal acquisition in this war has never been lost on either side, given how it would have offered Daesh — had it succeeded in wresting it from the pro-Iraqi forces — complete control of a border crossing with Turkey and intensified the scope of its operations. More than a 1,000 of its fighters have been killed in Kobani, significantly depleting its ranks and the outcome proves that the US-led coalition’s tactical air campaigns, in collaboration with the Kurdish Peshmerga’s ground offensives, are leading to the desired results.
Hopefully, this victory signals a turning point in the war against this barbaric entity and of its imminent end.
