The UAE’s efforts to increase the gross national income per capita by 65 per cent and boost the number of citizens employed in the private sector tenfold by 2021 is achievable and laudable.

The decision, put into effect by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, illustrates the faith of the country’s rulers coupled with the ambition of the Emirati workforce, which has been galvanised to make a mark in the nation’s fortunes in the economic, tourism and trade sectors.

Investments must, therefore, be made in two key platforms —quality education and result-oriented training. This, in order to pick up the relevant skills. When this is achieved, a big number of Emiratis will make a significant dent in the job market.

The country already has an attractive environment for business and investment and by that parameter plans for future development are right on target, to realise the 2020 vision.

The economy is set to diversify and the GDP is primed for an increase. The presence of a robust Emirati workforce would add more sheen to these achievements.
