Creating a synergy between symbolism and its deliverables lies at the heart of result-oriented outcomes and the UAE has once again provided a great example of how well it understands this synergy by setting up the permanent international headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) in Abu Dhabi’s Masdar City. The 32,000 square metre complex consists of three interconnected buildings that work together to conserve energy and water and create shared space. The building is the first in the UAE to achieve a four-pearl Estidama construction rating — a UAE-certification system stressing energy, water and carbon efficiency. Aesthetically, as well as in terms of its performance, the Irena headquarters is poised to become an enduring global symbol of the power of renewables as it leads by example. Every aspect of the building’s performance highlights energy conservation at its best. In hosting it in its capital, the UAE reaches yet another milestone in its environmental march as it places action before axioms and provides concrete examples of its commitment to promote sustainability and renewability.

In a global climate where safe, secure and clean energy are becoming the most important collateral for mankind’s well-being, the UAE is proving how determination and vision can make all the difference. The rapidly depleting natural resources of the planet offer little choice but to mend our ways and it is achievements like these that have the power to contain the tide of environmental retribution from taking its toll.
