Imposing stiff penalties on the guilty and people assisting them could solve problem
The recent arrest of a number of infiltrators by the UAE authorities highlights the importance of addressing the issue on a consistent and continuous basis. This is being said given that some people would use various unconventional means to break the law.
The Ministry of Interior has managed in a recent raid to arrest 31 infiltrators and illegal immigrants who were staying at an accommodation. Some of the infiltrators were hiding in large barrels and kitchen cupboards and the authorities were able to identify the accommodation following a tip off, said Major General Nasser Al Awadi Al Menhali, Acting Deputy Assistant at the Ministry of Interior for Naturalisation, Residency and Borders. The person responsible for this was arrested and sentenced to two months in jail, deportation and a fine of Dh2 million.
Setting stiff penalties in this case is important as the fines are imposed on the infiltrators and those assisting them. What is also of importance here is the role of the public as this helps determine whether the problem is eliminated or not. Harbouring infiltrators is illegal and punishable by law and the severity of the punishment should be made known to the public.
