A special unit will seek to reduce the considerable losses suffered by the country
Cyberspace is the new frontier in the battle against crime and the UAE government has set up a special unit under the federal courts to combat it.
This is extremely urgent as cyber crimes — including financial scams, pornography and hacking of computer systems — are an increasing threat to government, companies and individuals, according to reports. By some estimates, the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council lose between $550 million (Dh2 billion) and $735 million annually to cyber crimes. This is likely to increase as more people and companies begin to conduct transactions and stay in contact with friends over the internet.
In the UAE some security agencies will be launching e-patrols — internet surfing by police officers — to gather intelligence and prevent cyber crimes.
The internet and cyberspace have become an invaluable tool for companies and people, by making doing business and staying in contact with friends simpler and faster. It is now also safer.
