Ban on Pakistan players baffling

PCB has failed to come out clean on the reasons behind its punitive measures

Last updated:

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is in a muddle. It appeared to hand life bans to Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf, and then a few hours later backtracked saying that the bans were not the end of their careers. In addition, the PCB fined or banned five other players. But none of the PCB's statements have been very clear about why these cricketers have been punished and the lack of transparency is very damaging to the game of cricket and the reputation of the board.

It is obvious that Younis has had a troubled captaincy over the past year and that Yousuf has led the side on a disastrous tour of Australia, but these should not be the grounds for bans. Such disciplinary action should be restricted for serious crimes like match-fixing or fighting with an umpire. The present cases have nothing to do with such activity and the failure of the PCB to be clear about why it has banned its players is an error.
