A dangerous situation brewing over Lebanon

There is mounting evidence of Hezbollah’s involvement in the Syrian conflict

Last updated:

No party in Lebanon should manipulate agendas when it comes to national interest. Lebanon is too volatile for it to risk becoming engaged in a war that is not of its making or get entangled in any given proxy standoff. Following such a route will only bring with it chaos and instability to the country.

There is mounting evidence of the extent that Hezbollah is involved in the conflict in Syria. The group has recently threatened to intervene further in the conflict if it sees any involvement from the US. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said he had called on his group to step up its presence and involvement in the conflict in Syria. “Syria has real friends in the region and the world. And they will never allow Syria to fall to the hands of the US, Israel or extremist groups. They will never allow it. You may ask how will this happen. The details will come later,” Nasrallah said.

Yet, such an analysis of the situation is ill-founded as the conflict in Syria has turned into a proxy war in which Hezbollah itself chose to become deeply entangled. The group should limit its presence to its own surrounding and should keep away from complicating matters further in Syria. Only the Syrian people will decide whom they want to join hands with in fighting for their freedom and rights.
