Al Ain: Al Qattara Fort took on a new role on Tuesday with the opening of a centre for artists in the city.

The fort has been restored, designed and funded entirely by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (Adach). Al Qattara Arts Centre will have extensive arts and culture programmes with a strong emphasis on Arab art and UAE heritage and culture.

The centre was inaugurated by Shaikh Tahnoun Bin Mohammad Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in the Eastern Region of Abu Dhabi.

An Adach official said the centre has the most advanced facilities for studying and improving skills in art.

It has classrooms, studios for a variety of activities such as conducting music classes, crafts, drawing and painting, a fully equipped pottery studio, a digital room suitable for photography and computer classes, a spacious calligraphy studio as well as an exhibition hall, cafe and library.

‘Four Decades' — the first art exhibition — has also been opened at the centre. It is a visual arts exhibition of 28 Emirati artists who began their artistic career in the 1970s.

The exhibition aims at showcasing the natural evolution in a sequential order. Womad (World of Music, Arts and Dance) Beyond is the first event at the Al Qattara Arts Centre which runs until April 6.
