    COVID-19: Late night prayers allowed in the UAE – all you need to know

    During the last 10 days of Ramadan, special late night prayers are held

    The National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) has announced guidelines for the late night prayers that are held during the last ten days of Ramadan.

    Late night prayers have been allowed In a government media briefing on April 27, NCEMA stated: “The ‘tahajjud’ prayers will be held during the last 10 days of Ramadan.”

    Limited to 30 minutes Similar to the Isha and Taraweeh prayers, which are completed within a span of 30 minutes, NCEMA has announced that the late night prayers will also be limited to 30 minutes.

    Itikaaf is not allowed Normally, during the last 10 days, some people choose to observe Itikaaf (seclusion) at mosques in the UAE. It has not been allowed this year.

    Mosques to be closed immediately after prayer The authority also issued directives for mosques to be closed immediately after the prayer is completed and for worshippers to follow all precautionary measures.

    Right before the start of Ramadan, UAE’s authorities had issued the following guidelines to be followed at mosques during the month:

    Ensure you are observing all precautionary measures, including wearing face masks and maintaining physical distancing. Bring your own prayer mat. Read the Quran through smart devices.

    While at the mosque, strictly avoid handshakes and any other physical greetings that breach physical distancing protocols. Maintain a safe distance from other worshippers as guided by floor stickers.

    Lectures and seminars in mosques remain suspended. However, worshippers have the option to virtually attend lectures.

    Organising Ramadan, iftar and donation tents and iftar tables is strictly prohibited. Donations should be channelled through accredited charity organisations in Dubai.

    The mosque will remain open from the time of azan until the end of obligatory prayer. Maximum duration of Isha and Taraweeh prayers in mosques is capped at 30 minutes.

    Isha prayers will be held five minutes after the azan. The mosque’s doors will be kept open from the beginning of the azan until the end of congregational obligatory prayer.

    Performing a second congregational prayer or praying alone after the completion of main prayers is not permitted.

    Individuals with chronic illnesses or compromised immunity are advised not to pray in mosques and avoid crowds.
