Manchester United icon explains why he’s starting over in Dubai and his love for this city
Dubai: Rio Ferdinand has decided it’s time to swap match fixtures for palm trees, walking away from the familiar comforts of the UK to start over in Dubai.
As the Daily Mail reported, the 46-year-old Manchester United legend has revealed the reasons behind his relocation, just months after sensationally quitting his punditry job at TNT Sports.
After ten years behind the mic and a lifetime dictated by football schedules, Ferdinand admitted he wanted to reclaim his time.
The move wasn’t about one single thing but a perfect storm of factors: lifestyle, safety, education, and—let’s not forget—weather.
On a recent trip, he saw Dubai in a new light while visiting friends of wife Kate, and suddenly the city clicked.
“In Dubai, it feels like they’re valued and the lifestyle means that they’re happy and vibrant with a good energy for the kids,” he said, according to The Daily Mail report.
Add in year-round sunshine and a school system that impressed him enough to book tours in February, and the decision was made. With Tate, 17, and Tia, 14, about to start their GCSEs, and younger sons Cree, 4, and Shae, 2, just beginning their education, Ferdinand felt the timing was perfect.
He was also blunt about what pushed him over the line: “The education system felt different, felt better for my kids… teachers in the UK feel undervalued, underpaid.”
That comment alone will raise eyebrows back home.
The family’s move is even more striking given that Ferdinand’s eldest son Lorenz, 19, just signed his first professional contract with Brighton in July. While Lorenz digs in on the south coast, dad is chasing a new life in the desert. And this isn’t Ferdinand turning his back on football altogether—he’s quick to insist the sport will remain in his orbit. But, as he put it, football is no longer the “governing body” of his life.
Instead, his focus is shifting to projects like his Football Escapes business, already rooted in Dubai, and his own brand, Rio Ferdinand Presents.
It’s less a midlife crisis and more of a strategic rebrand.
When he announced his TNT Sports departure in May, Ferdinand kept it classy, thanking his colleagues for “10 incredible years” and describing the role as a “dream come true.”
Yet beneath the niceties was a man itching to break free. The Daily Mail described his relocation as a “huge lifestyle change” and they’re not exaggerating. Ferdinand isn’t retiring quietly to suburbia; he’s stepping into a star-studded expat enclave where global athletes reinvent themselves. Cristiano Ronaldo has business ties and property here, David Beckham’s name carries weight in the city, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic treat it as their training ground, and Gary Neville drops in regularly for work and leisure. Dubai has become a playground for sports royalty, influencers, and entrepreneurs alike, and Ferdinand is now officially part of that glittering club.
So while Lorenz sweats it out at Brighton, Rio will be sweating it out in climate-controlled gyms before cooling off in infinity pools, surrounded by Kate’s Instagram-perfect snapshots of their new life.
For a man who’s spent decades playing and commentating on the beautiful game, the real victory might just be stepping back and enjoying a slower, sunnier, more glamorous chapter. Or, in plainer terms: goodbye fixture list, hello first-class lifestyle.
Dubai isn’t just Rio Ferdinand’s new playground—it’s long been a magnet for football royalty looking for sunshine, safety, and a tax-free lifestyle.
