The ideal type and time to exercise during Ramadan
Contrary to what many people think, staying in shape in Ramadan is not impossible. With the long hours of fasting, many question how fitness can be integrated into their Ramadan routine. Nusra Al Nasri, a freelance yoga instructor talks to Gulf News about the ideal time and type of exercise during the month of Ramadan.
Al Nasri recommends practicing moderate yoga and/or a 15- to 20-minute walk as the best type of exercise during this month. A modified yoga routine which consists of “lots of breathing techniques and simple stretching exercises is the ideal way to tone your body,” she said. During Ramadan Al Nasri thinks it is best to avoid dynamic exercise routines and focus on posture and simple warm-up moves.
The idea that exercising while fasting is harmful to the body is also a common misconception Al Nasri added. In fact, doing yoga during fasting hours is beneficial for the body both internally and externally. “Practicing correct breathing will give your more energy and will keep you feeling fresh and calm while you’re fasting,” she said.
The perfect time for exercising is another common dilemma. According to Al Nasri, a good time to do yoga, simple stretches or go for a walk is 4.30pm. “I recommend exercising on an empty stomach before opening your fast.”
A low percentage of people are health conscious about what they eat during Ramadan, Al Nasri also pointed out. “Many people have very heavy iftars followed by desserts, which are unnecessary for the body,” she said. As a result, heavy meals will take longer to digest making it harder to exercise after breaking your fast.
