Sunday Supplement

The folks at Sky Sports’ ever popular Sunday Supplement will be bringing out World Cup special episodes straight from the bleachers in Russia. Host Neil Ashton will be joined by journalists covering the tournament for a series of podcasts over the course of the competition. While the main focus of the show will be England’s campaign in Russia, the other teams will also be closely watched through the length of the World Cup.

Burn It All Down

The feminist podcast you didn’t know you needed, Burn It All Down is a smart, funny and inclusive look at all things sports, through the lens of five proud feminists, whose credentials range from sportswriters to history professors. Each week, the podcast brings an “intersectional feminist view to the biggest stories in sports, toss the most abominable people in athletics on the proverbial Burn Pile, celebrate some of the most badass women, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming people in sports, and interview some of the most influential figures in the game”. While NFL seems to be one of their hot topics, the women also discuss sports on the other side of the pond, and no doubt the World Cup will be a major point of discussion.

American Fiasco

In the words of host and narrator Roger Bennett, World Cup is “the circus that takes place every four years”. The lifelong Evertonian, most famous for his role at the Men in Blazers podcast and show, takes footie from its home in England to the land across the Atlantic, to tell the story of the time when the US men’s football team set their sights — without irony — at the World Cup, all the way back in 1998. A 12-part series, American Fiasco is a story about how “not to win” the World Cup, but told in the most captivating way possible. It’s a tale of the underdogs, of hubris and of eventual heartbreak. For the people who live their lives for football season after season and the four-year cycle of the World Cup, this is a not-to-miss podcast, served up by WNYC.

The Football Ramble

Established in 2007, this independent football podcast from England set itself apart right from the beginning with its fresh voice and entertaining take on the sport. Hosted by Marcus Speller, Jim Campbell, Luke Moore and Pete Donaldson, the bi-weekly podcast is the place to hit up if you’re looking to listen to four non-ex-footballers, but as passionate fans dissect the sport ever-so-lovingly and provide incisive stats and analysis for the discerning fan.

The Indy Football Podcast

A podcast I listen to to keep up with the English Premiere League and the Champion’s League tournaments is The Independent’s The Indy Football Podcast. A rotating panel of guests including players, agents and coaches join Sports Editor and host Ed Malyon, as well as others from the Independent football team, as they dissect the week’s games. To get yourself in the mood for June 14’s opening match, check out their March 27 episode where Ed was joined by reporters Jack Pitt-Brooke and Jack Austin to rank the World Cup nations from one to 32 and discuss what they’ve learned from the international friendlies so far.
