Dubai: The iconic Kolkata chain that perfected the tastes of 19th century Awadh from Northern India here in Dubai is closing down ‘temporarily’ on March 22, three years after it set up shop in the emirate.

“We are serving one last time from our current location on Saturday,” confirmed Partha Ghosal, manager of ‘Shiraz – The Golden Restaurant’ in Bur Dubai.

Snehashish Chakrabarty, CFO of the restaurant’s holding company, Al Abbas Group, told XPRESS: “We are opening a central kitchen in Rashidiya soon and more outlets across multiple locations in Dubai.”

The first overseas branch of the iconic restaurant set up in 1940s in the Eastern Indian city is famed for its array of Mughlai influenced-dishes. During its three year stint here, it had formed a legion of loyal fans. “Shocking, Shiraz, was the only place in Dubai we could reconnect with the happy-go-goodie lifestyle of Kolkata,” said Dubai-resident Abhiroop Sen.

Jhumsum Banerjee, a teacher from Sharjah, echoed the same sentiments. “Shiraz to us was a piece of homeland Kolkata. I feel that a part of my homeland is going away from me,” she said.
