The bite-sized Spanish dish is a hit at Aquara, a dining haven for those who love the sea
The Spanish may lay fierce claim to their much-loved tapas, but Aquara Restaurant and Lounge at the Dubai Marina Yacht Club has well and truly made the bite-sized dining concept its own with its World Tapas and Beverage Brunch every Friday. And while the nibbles may be a far cry from the traditional fare one might find served at a bar in Barcelona, the careful detail paid to presenting flavours from countries as diverse as India, Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, South Africa and Mauritius is impeccable.
In signature Dubai style, the address is everything and the Dubai Marina Yacht Club does not disappoint. Tucked away in the heart of new Dubai, it has rapidly gained a fond reputation among regulars as a great hideaway both during the week and otherwise.
While this ever-expanding part of town has no dearth of impressive venues, it is easier said than done to fine one that is the perfect blend of casual yet chic, which is where Aquara carves a niche for itself. More than just a club for the privileged few, the property truly indulges those who love the sea. Set against the spectacular backdrop of a 3.5km canal, the view exceeds all expectations.
Whether a seasoned yachting enthusiast or one-off visitor, the first thing that hits home on entering the restaurant is its understated but chic nautical vibe. Having been seated at a table on the deck overlooking yachts berthed at the property’s private marina, I am given barely a minute to take in my surroundings before being greeted by what is to be the first of many tapas platters for the afternoon.
Mediterranean island
Once we’ve established that most of the hard work will be done for us courtesy of our enthusiastic servers, my companion and I are really able to kick back. You can be excused for believing you’re unwinding on a vibrant Mediterranean island as the soothing deep soul and house beats churned out by DJ Scott are not dissimilar to those one would expect from a seasoned European DJ.
Unlike more raucous brunch affairs where one has to brave crowds dressed to the nines at buffet counters, we enjoy having our food brought to us.
Menu
Seafood seems to feature prominently on the menu and this suits me perfectly. From a Middle Eastern-inspired garlic and lemon shrimp preparation that is complemented perfectly by a dollop of creamy (yet not overbearingly so) hummus to a tangy avocado and prawn salad that teases the palate with its citrusy notes and fresh tuna that is drizzled with a refreshing yet unusual combination of minted yoghurt and cucumber, our taste buds are pleasantly assaulted by a variety of flavours.
Vegetarians need not worry about being neglected as the potato chaat with fried onions hits all the right spots with its delicate blend of spices. If piping hot, hearty food is what it takes for you to feel truly indulged, you can do no better than the fiery orange tandoori chicken drumsticks or stick to that reliable favourite — calamari rings with a hot tomato sauce that works wonderfully with the batter. Those brave enough to venture away from the comfort of their tables, will be pleasantly surprised by a live sushi and cheese counter as well as carving station, which seems to be a nod to the good old Sunday roast.
Straying from what has come to be the city’s unofficial brunch timings of 12 to 5pm, Aquara opens doors at 2pm in a bid to accommodate weary revellers from the night before, and is the perfect place for diners looking for a more laid-back start to the day.
