The A-Z of OJ

The guilty verdict delivered against OJ Simpson ends another turbulent chapter in his life.

From his meteoric rise to fame as an NFL footballer and Hollywood actor to his arrest for murder and subsequent acquittal in the ‘trial of the century', he has rarely been far from the spotlight. Here's a guide through his troubled times:

ALL-AMERICAN HERO:
Born in the San Francisco slums, OJ Simpson rose from humble origins to become one of American football's greatest players and star in Hollywood films such as the Naked Gun trilogy.

BRONCO SUV: After failing to turn himself in to face charges over the murders of his former wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ronald Goldman on 12 June 1994, OJ led police on a bizarre low speed chase in his distinctive white Ford Bronco SUV, watched live on TV by millions.

COCHRAN: Johnnie Cochran was the flamboyant attorney who defended OJ at his murder trial.

DNA: OJ's was found at the murder scene, but his defence team at the trial managed to cast doubt over it — claiming evidence had been planted by the LAPD.

EUNICE DURDEN: OJ's mother, was a hospital administrator, his father Jimmy Lee Simpson a chef. They separated five years after his birth.

FOOTBALL: OJ rose from the ranks of college football to gain star status with the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers, before being inducted into the NFL's Hall of Fame in 1985.

GLOVE: During his murder trial OJ was asked to try on a leather glove found at the scene. The jury was told by Cochrane “if it doesn't fit, you must acquit''. It didn't and they did.

HERTZ: At the height of his fame OJ became the face of Hertz hire cars.

IF I DID IT: The title of the book OJ wrote in 2006 in which he gave a first-person hypothetical account of the murder as if he had committed it. It was withdrawn by Harper Collins shortly before its release, only to be published later by the Goldman family.

JUICE: OJ's nickname during his years of fame and fortune

KATO KAELIN: A Hollywood hanger-on, Kaelin had been living at OJ's home at the time of the murders and was called to give evidence.

LAS VEGAS: A court in the city last Saturday found him guilty on 12 charges of armed robbery, conspiracy to kidnap and assault with a deadly weapon.

MARGUERITE L. WHITLEY: OJ's first wife and mother of his first three children.

NICOLE BROWN: His second wife and mother of their two children Sydney and Justin. The couple divorced in 1992. Two years later she and her friend Ronald Goldman were found murdered.

ORENTHAL: OJ's first name.

PALACE STATION HOTEL: It was here, in September 2007, that OJ burst into room 1203 accompanied by an armed gang and seized sports memorabilia worth thousands of dollars from two dealers.

QUESTIONS: Earlier this year Las Vegas Judge Jackie Glass asked him: ‘I don't know, Mr Simpson, what the heck you were thinking?' Celebrity interviewer Gayl Murphy put it this way: ‘How could someone with so much let it go through their fingers like that?'

RUSH: In 1973 OJ became the first NFL player to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season.

SANTA MONICA: On February 7, 1997 a civil jury in Santa Monica found OJ liable for the wrongful death of Goldman and battery of Nicole. Simpson was ordered to pay $33.5 million in damages. He never did.

TRIAL OF THE CENTURY: Watched at its height by 108 million people, OJ's murder trial split America along race lines. Whites were outraged by OJ's acquittal by a mostly black jury on October 3, 1995, while many blacks saw it as belated justice.

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA: After High School, OJ won an athletic scholarship to USC.

VERDICT: For the families of Nicole Brown and Ronald Goldman, the guilty verdict provides a measure of relief.

WALTER CAMP AWARD: One of three college football prizes OJ won in 1968, when he rushed 1,709 yards and made 22 touchdowns.

px CORPORATION: One of many brands and businesses for which OJ became a public face, or “spokesman''.

YALE GALANTER: OJ's lawyer, said his client would appeal against the verdict.

ZIP CODE 90049: The location of Nicole's home in South Bundy Drive, Brentwood, Los Angeles.
